What Is A Yoga Diet?

Many people often make the mistake of thinking that yoga or yogic diet consists of nothing but gluten-free, organic, hormone free, farm-raised foods. However, there is a lot more that goes into a yoga diet than what meets the eye.

Yoga diets typically follow a few simple rules. Here, we’ve compiled a list of rules that will help you balance a healthy yoga diet into your lifestyle:

1. A Yoga Diet Should Be Vegetarian – Most meat eaters will object to the idea of a vegetarian diet based on the fear of becoming protein deficient. However, this is not true since meat is a poor source of protein and a high source of cholesterol. It also contains high levels of uric acid and other toxins, which can cloud up your mental state.

2. A Yoga Diet Should Contain Fresh Foods And Be Free Of Chemicals – There is nothing worse than thinking that you are eating something healthy when it is processed and drained of its nutrition. A Yoga diet should consist of fresh foods, and you should always try to aim for organic, chemical-free foods.

3. You Should Eat at Regular Intervals – Eating at regular intervals will help your body properly use its energy throughout the day. You should always avoid eating food two hours before exercising or going to sleep. It ensures that your body will not take away from the energy that it needs for proper digestion.

4. The Practice Of Ahimsa – This practice of nonviolence is something that we should all apply to our diets and into our everyday lives as well. It involves making conscious choices about our health that do not harm other people, animals, or the planet. If you are eating something that came from the exploitation of another creature, you are not following a proper yoga diet.

5. A Yoga Diet Should Be Sattvic – Sattvic foods are pure and are the best choice for the serious Yoga student. They are easily digestible whole foods. They nourish our minds and bodies and help it function at its fullest potential. These foods can include things such as whole-meal bread, fresh fruit, and vegetables, pure fruit juices, dairy products, legumes, nuts, seeds, sprouts, honey, and herbs. 

6. Fasting – Fasting is the practice of refraining from foods for a certain period, allowing the body time to clean and rejuvenate itself. Some yogis recommend fasting at least once per week, but you can choose to fast as often or as little as you want. Some fasts are strict and do not allow any foods or liquids to enter the body, others allow only water and fruit juices. No matter how you choose to fast, always remember that the goal is to purify your body. Listen to what your body is telling you.

Choosing what to eat can be a difficult decision. With so many foods out there claiming to be healthy for you, it’s no wonder that people tend to shy away from eating healthy, whole diets. Hopefully, with these basic principles, you will be able to follow a proper yoga diet.
